2025 Coaching Staff

LISA MACKENZIE – COACH

I’m thrilled to join Peel Lightning as the Opens Head Coach for the 2025 season!

Off the court, I’m a proud wife, mum to three kids (14, 12, and 6), and a business owner of two private preschools. I love coastal walks, playing netball (yes, I still play!), and a good social catch-up.

As an Advanced Accredited Coach, I bring experience from Western Roar Netball Club, including two recent Men’s premierships as Assistant Coach, and as Head Coach of the WA Thunder State Mixed Open team.

My coaching philosophy focuses on culture, connections, and communication. I’m passionate about building a positive team environment, fostering strong relationships, and helping every athlete reach their full potential on and off the court.

This season, my goal is to create an elite training environment and build a team ready to challenge any opposition. Let’s make it a great season!

ASH BRAZIL – ASSISTANT COACH

After an incredible 15-year professional netball career, Ash recently retired, playing 148 games in the Suncorp Super Netball League for the NSW Swifts, West Coast Fever, and Collingwood Magpies. The highlights of her career include representing the Australian Diamonds at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, taking home Gold, and winning the World Cup in 2023—her final professional game.

“I’m really excited to be working with Peel Lightning in 2025. I’m hoping to bring my experience as a professional netballer and apply it both on and off the court. I’m particularly excited to work with the mid-court players. Having played mostly WD and C throughout my career, I’m eager to teach a strong defensive game and emphasize working as a unit. Speaking with Lisa, our focus will be on bringing out the best version of every player in our team. I can’t wait!”

DANIEL COOLS – ASSISTANT COACH

I began my netball journey coaching the Waroona Demons Football and Netball League sides, where I enjoyed five rewarding seasons, securing three league premierships and one reserves title.

My playing career kicked off in 2016 when I answered an ad for West Coast Thunder Trials. I earned a spot in the Men’s Open side and played until 2023, finishing on a high with a National Championship victory on home soil in Perth. A career highlight came in 2022 when I debuted for the Australian Men’s Team—an incredibly proud moment.

When the Men’s WANL competition resumed in 2018, I joined the Perth Lions (Western Roar), captaining the team twice, securing three premierships, and competing in the grand final every season. In 2023, I wrapped up my WANL career on a personal high, captaining the team to a premiership and earning the WANL Men’s MVP award.

I was also privileged to be a West Coast Fever Training Partner for several seasons, gaining invaluable experience in a high-performance SSN environment.

As my playing career winds down, I’m excited to give back to the sport through coaching, sharing my experiences, and helping athletes reach their potential both on and off the court.

MEGAN NOWOTNY – TEAM MANAGER

I’m thrilled to be back as Team Manager for the Opens team in 2025! I had the privilege of being the inaugural Opens Manager during the first three years of our WANL journey, and I’m excited to return courtside alongside an exceptional coaching team in Lisa, Ash, and Dan.

I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to learn from these inspiring coaches and dedicated athletes, and I can’t wait to see what this new group can achieve together. Bring on Season 2025!

TRACEY BOREHAM – COACH

Along my journey of 25 years elite coaching experience, including a stint at the AIS as an invitee coach for the Australian 21/Under selection camp, I have been privileged to work and be mentored by incredible lead netball coaches from Australia and New Zealand.

I am an advanced accredited coach who is progressing towards the Elite coach accreditation.

Some roles I have performed include: coaching for WA at the national championships, Head Coach at Coastal (Sharks) Netball Region and Peel Lightning, Regional Development Officer for Coastal, and NWA Academy coach. I have earned NWA and Australian Sports Commission coaching awards along the way.

All of this has led me to be in a great position to coach the 21’s. I feel I am in a privileged position of seeing our young up and coming players develop and foster a love for the game. If you bring the commitment to the program, and are willing to work hard, Sam and I will provide you with the tools and knowledge to succeed.

Our goal for the 2025 WANL season is to experience success on and off the court.

SAM MCPHERSON – ASSISTANT COACH & BOLTS COACH

I live close to the beach in Golden Bay, with my 16-year-old daughter and our two dogs, Phoebe and Cedric. I work in public education and am currently an instructional coach at a local primary school. I am a long-standing President of Bandits Netball Club and a proud life member of the Rockingham & Districts Netball Association. I have been coaching since high school (that’s quite some time ago now) and it is a genuine passion of mine, developing local talent and inspiring a love of netball in junior players.

There are so many highlights of my coaching journey, some of these include Regional Cadet Cup premiership with Coastal Sharks Netball Region in 2014, Metro League 18U Division 1 premiership with RDNA in 2021, three consecutive A grade premierships with my junior Bandits team 2021-2023, finishing runner-up in 16/U Pool A at State Cup with the Fever in Time program in 2023 and of course finishing 1v2 final winners in the WANL Futures competition with Peel Lightning Bolts in 2024. I was grateful to be awarded the 2024 Peel Lightning ‘Heart of Gold’ Club Person of the Year and hope to continue to contribute to the club for years to come. In 2025, my goals are to complete my Advanced Accreditation, see the Bolts continue to shine in the WANL Futures competition and support Tracey and the 21s team to make finals. I look forward to getting to know the new Lightning members across the season!

BROOKE ONOFORO – TEAM MANAGER

With over a decade of experience managing teams in the Rockingham & Districts Netball Association (RDNA), I’ve gained a deep understanding of leadership and fostering team culture. Serving as RDNA President, my focus is on creating an inclusive and supportive environment for all members, from juniors to seniors. I prioritise open communication, encouraging players, coaches, and volunteers to share feedback and ideas, ensuring everyone feels valued. Building a positive team culture off and on the court is key. In addition to leadership, I hold a Level 1 sports trainer certification and am pursuing Level 2 while studying Paramedical Science. This background allows me to prioritise player health and wellness, offering support in injury prevention, recovery, and mental resilience. My goal is to ensure that teams not only perform at their best but also stay healthy and united throughout the season.

HANNAH FOLEY – CO-COACH

I have been a Head coach of many club and regional representative teams at both Success Netball Association at Smarter than Smoking Association Championships, Fuel to Go & Play Association Championships, Metro League, State Cup, and also the Demons Netball Region in the Netball WA run regional competitions, and I have worked with Sam McPherson to create a successful and aligned coaching partnership with the WANL Futures during the 2024 season.

I’m an intermediate coach working towards my advanced coaching accreditation.

I have been a player in the elite Netball WA pathway, through WANL, I understand and recognise the importance of the coaching and player dynamic for a healthy progression in skill development, nutrition and mental health. My understanding of skill progression, error detection and strategy has grown over the years through my experiences as a player, coach, umpire and Association Umpire Development Officer at club, association, regional, state indoor and WANL levels.

For the 2025 season, I am proud to be working with Sam McPherson as Co-Coaches for the Peel Lightning Futures program and am looking forward to continuing to build upon the success of the 2024 season with the athletes in the squad.

TAYLOR BOWEY – ASSISTANT COACH & SPARKS COACH

I have been around netball since I was born, with my older sister playing and my mum also being a player and a coach. I played netball from a young age and moved through the netball pathway. At the age of 18 I moved into coaching and have a lot of experience coaching at club and association level. I also was an assistant coach in the FIT program in 2024. I would like to further my technical and tactical knowledge and experience through being an assistant to the WANL futures program and implementing it when coaching the Sparks program.
